Grade 5-10, Tuesdays, 1:00pm to 2:15pm Nov 29, Dec 6, 13, Jan 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Feb 7, 14 (Ten Weeks).

The purpose of the Logic and Reasoning Program (Courses I to III) is to teach students to be able to take a plain language argument and translate it into a mathematical language which can be analyzed and proven or disproven. The students will start with “fallacies” and throughout the three courses gain skills to help them think CLEARLY.

Class Goals (All Three Courses):

An understanding of logic is likely to benefit students in literally any conceivable endeavor as its praxis is taking a methodical approach to the way that we think and distinguishing good thinking from bad thinking.

The purpose of the Logic and Reasoning Program (Courses I to III) is to teach students to be able to take a plain language argument and translate it into a mathematical language which can be analyzed and proven or disproven. When you go from one form of logic language to another you gain or lose certain things.

Our Complete Logic program (Three 10 week courses) covers:

  • Logical Fallacies (“Bad thinking”)
  • Syllogistic Logic (Truth Tables and Venn diagrams)
  • Truth Functional Logic (Predicate Logic — If/Then Statements)
  • Evidence, Proofs, and Conclusions
  • Tools for finding invalid arguments
  • Arguing against valid arguments

For the Winter :

  • Introduction to the purpose of logic and its many uses and the value of it as a discipline
  • Extensive discussions on logical fallacies and muddled thinking
  • Syllogistic Logic (Truth tables and Venn diagrams)

The Winter Program is 10 Weeks, beginning on Tuesday Nov 29, Dec 6 and 13, then every Tuesday from January 3 through February 14.  From 1:00pm to 2:15pm. Ages 10-16 (~Grades 5 to 10).


 Your Instructor:

Bill Fox

Mr. Fox received his Bachelors in Political Theory with a Philosophy Minor at BYU, and his Juris Doctorate from William and Mary Law School. Mr. Fox has had a wide ranging career ranging from corporate law to sales to K-12 education. He currently works as an intelligence analyst, is the father of three grown daughters, and two grandchildren, and currently lives with his wife in Leesburg.
